------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack's figure was silhouetted against the moon as he sat on the roof of a house.
"Unbelievable" he muttered, as he brought a leg up to his chest.
He looked up to the moon and frowned.
"After all this time, all these years? This...This is the time you choose to speak to
me!?"
"I do not understand why you are so surprised, Jack". the voice responded
"Surprised? Oh i'm more than a little surprised! Why,of all times, did you choose to speak to me now!?", Jack said, gripping his staff in his icy hand.
Jack began to purse his lips and furrow his eyebrows in frustration.
"You know exactly why i am here, and why i am speaking to you"
Jack flinched, and oddly enough, a cold shiver- colder than usual, ran down his back. This unnerved him a bit.
"If i knew, i wouldn't be so surprised, now would i?", Jack muttered, glaring at the moon.
"Foolish boy. Do not be so coy with me. I created you. I know your hopes. I know your fears. I know what you do at all times."
There was a pause
"I know exactly what you are thinking"
Jack scoffed, pursing his lips. Slowly, he raised himself up, balancing himself with his staff, as he turned around and backed up on the roof.
"Oh,yes, i'm sure you do. Yeah right, why don't you ju-"
"You are scared, Jack"
Jack paused as his back was turned to the moon. His breathing be came heavy , and he balled his fists in anger and frustration. His staff created under the pressure of his hands. "You don't understand anything..." he said.
"i understand all too well, Jack"
Jack turned around, stomping on the roof as he did so, and glared at the moon. "Liar!" he snarled, teeth baring in an animalistic way.
"You may be a spirit of 300 years, but you are still human in many ways, Jack.", the voice echoed.
Jack paused for a moment, and squinted. "What are you trying to say exactly?", Jack scoffed.
"Lay down your guard. You want to be with her, Jack"
Jack flinched as he took in a sharp, icy breath. His eyes that were locked onto the moon's form were unmoving. Shakily, he swallowed and let out a breath as his head lowered down towards his pale feet. "What do you want?", he said under his breath.
"You can not be with that girl, Jack"
Jack bit his lip as his face turned to a frown. Briskly, he looked up at the moon and clenched his staff. "And why not!?"
"She is a human"
"So am i!" Jack snarled.
"No, you are not". These words jabbed into Jack like needles.
Jack's voice began to crack as he spoke. "Yes i am!"
"Jack" the voice echoed, "You are a spirit. An entity. You do not posses flesh and blood like that girl"
"But...I" Jack started, but was interrupted by his cracking voice.
"I am not doing this to hurt you, Jack. That is not my intention. My intention is to help you."
"Help me?! You're telling me to give up something i lo-" , Jack's shaky breath cut him off before he could go on. He squinted his eyes as his eyebrows furrowed. Cold tears threatened to sting his eyes, and he blinked furiously to dismiss them.
The moon's disembodied voice seemed to give a ghostly sigh before it began to speak once again.
"Jack, if you continue with what you are doing, you will only be met with sadness. Nothing more"
Jack bit his lip sharply, but no blood emerged. Quickly, he looked into the sky. "And is what i have now any better...?", he said, stifling a cry emerging from his throat. "For three hundred years i have had no one...No one to talk to! I have been invisible to almost everyone! But no one has even spoken to me!". He began to pace as he waved his staff towards the moon in frustration. "And, and then she shows up and she can speak to me and touch me and...And i'm supposed to just throw that away!?".
"Jack-"
"No!" Jack snarled. "You don't understand me at all! You said you want to help me but all you want to do is hurt me! And you know what? For once in my life i just want to be happy! Now, leave me alone and stay out of my life. If this is all you have to say to me after three hundred years then i don't want to hear it!". Jack slammed his staff down with anger- creating a small shock wave throughout the roof top.
"You won't be able to stay with her Jack"
"STOP IT!" Jack screamed, clutching his head with his arms.
"Stop acting like a child. You are not a human Jack, but she is. Unlike you she has a limited life span, and will not live on forever as you will. Do you realize this?"
"Urrgh! Will you just shut up!?", he said with a snarl.
"If you stay with her you will have to watch her die one day just as every mortal does, but you will live on just as you always will. Is this what you want,Jack?"
Jack let out a scream, launching himself into the sky as he shot an icy blast from his staff into the sky. "I SAID SHUT UP!"
For a moment there was silence, except for Jack's ragged breathing as he floated silently in mid air.
"I have given you my warning Jack. But i will do as you wish. But heed my words. If you do not listen to what i have said, only sadness will come to you. With this, i bid you farewell. But do not forget, i will always be watching you" The voice drifted off into a whisper.
"Always..."
Silence.
Jack's posture relaxed as he floated back down to the roof top. The moon's voice ceased to continue, yet he waited a few more moments before leaving. Silently, he grasped his staff in his hand and made his way over the many houses before him until he got to yours and floated silently into your bedroom. The room was dark except for the small shadows gracing the wall. It was difficult for him to see the details of your room, and he waited a moment before he continued.
Your figure lay upon your bed and faced him, yet you were not concious. Sighing, he leaned his staff against the wall and slowly made his way over to your bed and kneeled in front of you. Lifting his arm, he placed a hand on your head, brushing away your (hair c) hair out of your face, and placed a hand on your cheek. He have out a small chuckle as he did so. "I thought she would wait up for me", he said to himself in a whisper. "I wonder what time it is...". He raised his head as he looked around the room for your alarm clock. When he found it he was startled. The clock read 6:00am. Three hours had gone by since you first opened the window for him. He looked back to you with wide eyes. "No wonder she's asleep" he said, " It's really late... I wonder when she wakes up. Does she have school tomorrow? Wait, what day is it?". Being a spirit with no use for time, these things often left Jack's memory. Quietly, he raised himself from your bed and looked around your room for a calendar. Unfortunately, he must have not looked around carefully enough as he knocked down a stack of books that lay on your desk onto the floor.
A hiss escaped through Jack's teeth as the books fell one by one. "Aw man", he began, "Jack, you idiot...". He began to smack himself in the head. "Idiot, idiot, idiot". But he was interrupted when he noticed that your sleeping figure was now stirring. His eyes widened at the site of this. Strangely, he felt nervous, but he did not know why. Putting on a smirk, he strut over to your bed and positioned his face right above yours. Stifling back a laugh, he waited for your eyes to flutter open.
As you were awaking from sleep, a cold shiver came over you, and you blindly reached for your your blanket- unknowing that Jack was slowly inching it away whenever your fingertips came close to it. You didn't hear it, but he giggled at your noticeable frustration at your disappearing blanket. After a few moments you became angry, and quickly opened your eyes- only to be met with two icy blue ones staring back at you less than an inch away.
"AAH!" you shrieked as you backed up into your bed. Holding back a laugh, Jack dove onto your bed and slapped a cold hand over your gawked mouth- silencing your scream. "Shhh!", Jack said, giving a toothy grin. "It's only me, (your n)!"
"MMMRF!", you continued, flailing your arms against the bed. Jack started to laugh. It was all to funny to him. "Oh man...You should have seen yourself! You were all "ahh!", and that expression! Oh man...Ah, but you should really keep it down though. Don't want your mom coming in again. What would she say if she came in and saw you pinned up against your bed by an invisible force?".
Your eyebrows furrowed as you frowned, and you raised a hand to push his hand away from your mouth. You wiped away some saliva from your lips with your arm before you looked back up to him. "She would think i'm nuts and would send me away to an asylum. What the heck are you doing scaring me like that, Jack!?", you whispered.
The spirit chucked and leaned back on the bed. He brought a leg up to his chest, and wrapped his arms around it. "Oh come on, it was so easy! Hilarious too. You're just boring", he gave a cheeky smirk as he looked at you. Your eyes narrowed as you looked at him. "Jack...", you began. He rolled his eyes, "Relax. I was only having a little fun with you, (your name)" he said after he gave your nose a playful poke.
You rolled your eyes as well, and brought yourself to a sitting position, crossing your legs as you did so. "Still, Jack. It's late, and i don't exactly appreciate being awoken to see two huge eyes staring back at me from above. Thats the stuff nightmares are made of. You scared the heck out of me!".
Jack looked down at his right hand as he fiddled with his thumb nail. "They're not that big", he said, playfully smirking.
"It was still mean", you said. "Especially after we...You know...", a blush crept onto your face as you looked at him. You noticed Jack ceased to play with his hand, and instead looked down at his feet. A noticeable blush also crept onto his pale cheeks.
"O-oh, yeah...That." In all honestly, Jack didn't forget. He was just too nervous to bring it up. He had yet to come to terms with what almost happened only hours before. "Well, i, i uh, what...What did you think...?", he said looking up at you from under his eye lashes. The blush that graced his cheeks was becoming far more noticeable than before, yet the fact that he was not looking directly at you still failed to hide it.
You brought your legs up to your chest as you brushed your (hair c) from your face. "Well um...I asked you first. G-go on", you said. You felt as awkward as Jack sounded.
Jack brought his other leg up to his chest and looked at you. The words he was trying to convey were getting trapped in his throat every time he tried to speak. He wondered how normal people do this on a daily basis. Then again, we was not exactly normal. He began to awkwardly scratch the back of his head as he spoke.
"It's just...This has never happened before, (your n). I've never been with a girl-well i've played with little kids- but never a girl my age. And, well...This is no new and i honestly....Don't know how to continue. I-I-I mean thats not what i meant! Aw man...." he stumbled over his words as he tried to speak.
An awkward laugh escaped your throat. You didn't exactly know how to continue either. "I know how you feel, Jack. This is a first for me as well, and honestly it's a little stranger with a,y'know, spirit". Jack cocked his head in agreement. "True", he said. It was no different for him.
A moment of silence filled the room.
Jack got up off the bed and grasped his staff in hand.
"Well, i uh, i should be going. It's late you know, and you have to go to sleep. Can't have you sleeping in on a...A um, Wednesday?". Jack forgot to find that calendar he was searching for.
You sat up and gave a small laugh as you wrapped your blanket around your soulders. The window remained open all this time, and your bedroom was so cold you could see your breath evaporating as you spoke.
"It's Monday, Jack", you smirked at his noticeable embarassment. You continued.
"But um, do you really have to go? I mean i haven't seen you in a while, and you weren't here for very long".
Jack signed to himself and lifted his arm to scratch the back of his head.
"Well...L-Like i said, you need your sleep, (f name)"
A sigh escaped your lips as a frown graced your illuminated features. "Yeah well, i'm going to have a pretty difficult time sleeping not knowing when i'll see you again. Knowing you you'll just jump out the window and leave again just like you did today. Speeking of which, what happened Jack?".
Jack flinched as he heard your question, but made an attempt to hide his uneasiness.
"Oh, that? That was nothing, don't worry about it. No big dea;", he said as he fiddled with his staff. " I uh, i just heard something and wanted to check it out is all".
You cocked your head at his peculiar answer. "Heard something? It's past midnight, what could you possibly have heard?". Feeling a little uneasy yourself, you began to raise yourself off the bed, and placed a food on the cold floor below- flinching a bit at the thin layer of ice that covered it.
Jack stepped forward and pushed you down by placing a cold finger on your forehead, giving an uneasy laugh as he did so.
"Hey hey hey! (F name), it's alright. Trust me. I just thought i heard...A child. I thought one was in trouble and well..."
"You wanted to see if they were okay?" you said as you psuhed his hand away fro your forehead.
"Yeah", he said as he leaned against his creaking staff.
You gave a confused frown, but relaxed after afew moments.
"*sigh*, all right Jack, if you say so. I still think you're acting a bit...Strange. But i'm tired so i'll let this go. For now", you said as you leaned back onto the bed and covered yourself in a blanket.
Jack chuckled and breathed an inner sigh of relief. "Good, so i'll be off then...", he started stepping toward the window, but was stopped by a hand grasping tightly at his frost covered sleeve.
"Hey. Did i say you could leave?" you said as you pulled on his sweater.
Jack winced at your abrupt gesture, but followed along semi-reluctantly. He really needed to go. "A kid giving me orders? Oh this is rich", he chucked to himself as he pushed your hand away and leaned against the wall.
"A kid!? we're the same age!" you scoffed.
"O contrare, i've been around for much longer than you. 300 years to be exact.", he said as he gave you a cheeky smirk.
Pausing a moment before returning his smirk with one of your own, you bluntly whispered "Yet you haven't matured one bit"
Jack frowned and turned around. "Okay i'm definately going now" he said as he placed a hand on your window sill.
A giggle escaped your mouth, and you reached out to grab the end of his staff.
"Oh come on Jack, i was only joking. Stay"
Jack raised his eyebrows at this little comment. "You...Really want me to stay?"
You nodded, "Of course"
"The night?", he asked again.
You rolled your eyes. "Yes"
Jack gulped at your response. "Well i..I um..."
You rolled your eyes again and pulled on his staff with such strength that Jack landed on the side of your bed.
"Jack", you whispered, "It's fine".
Jack didn't have time to answer. You had already lowered yourself onto the bed and snuggled into the blankets. "Stay as long as you like. Oh and Jack?"
He looked up as a blush graced his features. "Y-yes?"
"Close the window".
Jack had forgotten about the window. In fact, he barely noticed it. Being the spirit of winter he did not feel the sting of the cold and therefor it did not matter whether the window was open or not. He was always cold, so why would it matter?
Jack jumped up from his seated position and proceeded to close the window. "Oh, yeah! Sorry about that. It's just that i, um, yeah. I'm sorry", he said as he locked the window.
You let out a small giggle. "Thanks Jack", you whispered.
"Not a problem..." he said as he stepped away from the window and took in his surroundings. The room was still quite dark all but for the few shadows on the wall. His eyes looked over your resting figure and noticed you were still shivering quite a bit. Frantically he looked around your room for something to cover you, and was pleased when he found a (coat c), draped over your desk chair. "It'll do" he thought as he draped it over your shoulders. When he looked over at your face he noticed that your eyes were already closed, and your breathing had slowed.
"So after all of this she just falls asleep just like that" he said. "Well she said she wanted me to stay so what should i do?", he said to himself as he rested his staff against the wall near your bed.
He noticed an empty spot at the end of your bed and got in as carefully and quietly as he could. Once he did so, he brought his legs up to his chest and placed his hands in his pockets.
Sighing, he took another glance around the room before settling on your figure once again. "I never thought i would see myself here", he though to himself.
After settling on your figure for a moment, his eyes drifted towards the window where the moons form was seen.
Jack narrowed his eyes as his eyes settled, and brought his legs closer to his chest and wrapped his arms around them tightly.
Sighing, he let his dead sink into his arms.
In the silence of the night the moons disembodied voice echoed in Jack's mind.
"She's a human"
He cringed.
"Stop it...", Jack thought.
"You're a spirit"
Jack tightened his grip on his arms.
"You do not posses flesh and blood like she does"
"Enough", he whispered to himself. "Just stop thinking about it. Block it out..."
"If you stay with her you will have to watch her die one day just as every mortal does"
"I said stop it...Stop it...I can't do this...Not all night..." Jack began to tighten into a fetal position.
"Hey, Jack?", your small voice pierced through the night air.
Jack raised himself up quickly, and palced his hands in his pockets as he originally did.
"Y-Yeah, (your n)"
"Do spirits ever sleep?"
Jack paused a moment before answering.
"...No".
